Remembering you Nainika, a month on....Mummy

Just when you thought, life slipped away through your fingers.......it comes calling. The minute you tell yourself that smiling is an impossible dream....it tickles your lips and makes you smile.
Smile is what you do when you are faced with the biggest fears of your life and it gives you that quiet strength to go ahead and deal with it.
Smile is that approving gesture that you give to your loved ones, when they are not sure.
Smile is what your little heart does when it wants you to know that you are still special and life isn't over yet.
When you are happy you smile but when you are sad, upset, dejected and feeling low, can you smile? Of course you can!
A smile is that small involuntary thing that means you are still alive and that's why, you need to smile in the face of all odds! Smile without a reason...smile for all the beautiful moments you have had in your life and better still....for the several ones that are yet to happen!
Today a month back once you came back from your horse riding lessons, you insisted you wanted to eat pancakes with blackberries. Never having had blackberries before, this unusual request was entertained by Daddy!! An otherwise usual Saturday morning turned into our worst nightmare! A bite of the pancake caused a severe allergic reaction and anaphylactic shock that took away your pulse and breathing. With no oxygen to the brain for over an hour, despite timely medical attention and best treatment, your brain died.
I can not forget the fateful morning when in Daddy's shaken phone call he said, "Please come home and save Nainika. She's not responding - ambulance is here." My whole world came crashing down and I came home to walk into a scene of shock not knowing what had happened. Daddy was crouching on the flood howling and there were a crowd of paramedics with medical equipment around you, trying to resuscitate you.
I followed instructions of the paramedics - "pack some change of clothes, we are going to the hospital"
I gave daddy some water to drink asking him to sit up and quickly packed some of your clothes and supplies. Your clothes still remain in my bag - I haven't had the courage to take them out sweetheart!!
At the hospital a crowd of staff took you straight in - I still wasn't clear what happened. I could only just see Daddy howling and broken, crying in my arms. The doctor asked me to come inside to where they took you and stand to watch. It was hard seeing you being hurt by pricking needles, inserting tubes, you bled and I stood there helpless.... I involuntarily extended by hand to touch your foot and suddenly your pulse returned. Your feet were ice cold....
When your pulse returned I thought you are back. The sounds of the equipment suddenly transported me back to when you were in my tummy. Every time I had an ultrasound all I wanted to do was hear your heartbeat. I never saw your image in the ultrasound - just hearing your heartbeat made me happy.
With your pulse returning I was sure you are my daughter - a fighter. I was confident you'd overcome this challenge as you always did. They did a CT scan and we waited a while to know the result. We were told you will be moved to an ICU bed in the country - a bed was being searched and it could be anywhere in the UK. I kept making a mental note of the instructions and things I had to do still wondering what exactly happened to my princess?
Your family - Sonal Sher Masi, Anupama Handoo Aunty, Pankaj uncle, Shafalica Bhan Kotwal Aunty, Chandan Kotwal uncle, Urmi Raina Aunty, Sanjay uncle, Sunny Kaul Bhaiya and Sapna Aunty were all with you by this time. We all waited anxiously.
The scan results indicated an irreversible damage to the brain. I saw it in the consultant's eyes and in Sunny bhaiya's eyes - it was all over. But i refused to accept it. I wanted to take you to the ICU straightaway - miracles do happen and I was not going to give up on you this easily. You had to fight back - you were Lakshmi's daughter.
St Mary's Paddington was where you were given a bed in the ICU. Within half hour of you arriving there the consultant sat Daddy and I down to tell us nothing could be done to save you anymore and that there was no hope.
I felt anger, extreme anger surge through me and I calmly said to the doctor - "thank you but we will review the case after 24 hours have passed. We are not in a rush. I am a mother, I gave her life and will fight to my last breath to do just that - give her life. Atleast give her a fighting chance at life?"
The consultant agreed and said we will have to have this conversation again - I have seen the scan and it's not looking good.
We prayed, millions of people prayed and tried hard to bring you back. Hundreds gathered at the hospital that night and the following nights to bring you back - chanting, reiki, prayers, blessings, holy water - everything was tried. Healers connected to your body and soul and tried to encourage you to fight back. Everyone said, her mum can help her come back - only she can help her.
On Monday morning a new consultant came and he said we needed to do the stem cell death test. An excruciating test to ascertain if there was any reflex in the body - if there was any sign of life. Your Daddy couldn't sit through this test sweetheart - he was struggling himself. I sat through the test, with your little hands in mine after each tear you failed I kissed you and said, it's ok, we'll try in the next one. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.... and no sign of life at all. You lay there smiling....peaceful in your expressions. Then I connected to you in a moment - I felt you speaking to me.
You said you are tired and want to leave but need mine and Daddy's permission. You said a better world, a longer journey awaits you and you need my help. In that moment sweetheart I let you go. I sent you off with all my love and blessings to set you off on that journey into the unknown. You wanted my help to convince Daddy to give you permission.
I went out and broke down. Told Daddy that he needs to let you go. I still didn't know what had happened that took you away from us. The doctors declared you Dead on Monday, 22nd May 2017. Daddy and I were helped by our dear elder brother and friend, Madhava Turumella ji to send you off. Daddy gave you permission. I knew that you somersaulted with joy as you were free....from this crippled, ailing body. Your soul was free to light up the universe.
For 3 days after Monday you still bought time for us to say bye to your body. For thousands to come and visit you, love you and return with a smile.
Today I pay tribute to you, a month on from that fateful Saturday morning by smiling. I struggle but I smile. Your warm cuddles and kisses, your giggles and funny stories resonate in my mind, stay in m heart. The life ahead is dedicated to you my love and I promise to live life to the fullest....just as you did, in the face of adversity.

Today for the first time I share the picture of you sleeping on your last day after the ventilator was switched off - your beautiful red dress gifted lovingly by your Masi Pooja Kaul Basu and make up by your pretty Aunty Anisha Safaya and Sindhu Koul Bingo Aunty. We were all there right by your side sending you off.

Our lives won't be the same ever, without you physically with us. We won't see you growing up but will feel you every moment of our being. We love you very very much princess - and miss you tonnes!!

Everybody's Dancing Tonight by Nainika Tikoo

Nainika composed and sang this song a few weeks before she died. Her zest and enthusiasm for life was in the many achievements she had to her credit at a tender age of 9 years!! I upload this video today for you all to become a part of Nainika's family and enjoy this beautiful song she wrote and composed herself. I apologise for the poor quality of the home video recorded by me - it was a personal memory that I never thought would be among the few that we are left with as she rests in peace in the heavens above.
Nainika Tikoo died as a result of anaphylaxis owing to a severe allergic reaction to Blackberries on 22nd May 2017. A month on, I pay tribute to her and many children who live with this danger over their head - allergies ought to be taken more seriously by everyone. #NainikaFights4AllergyCare

once upon a time there was a little girl. She was hopping and jumping around in the garden and then her skipping rope fell in a bush. She coudn't find the skipping rope but she found a dazzling shinning gold fish she brought it inside. The girl fed it and played with it and she slept with it and one morning the girl wished for some thing amazing. She wished for an ice palace and an elsa dress and elsa cape and elsa glass slipers, she wished to be a mermaid and elsa and her wish came true she was so lucky because she had a magic gold fish. She loved writing stories a lot. She is a good reader and even her fish could read. She loved her fish she could play with it all day. Thats the end of the magic GOLD fish story.

i            love      you

why    dont     you     come    to     my       home

Written by: Nainika Tikoo (Age: 5 years)

Story of Foolish King Raoul

Once there was a King Named Raoul of Foolishland who was always surrounded by his Chamchas who were always falsely Praising him and getting Rewards, nobody ever pointed out his faults and weaknesses. The king was always expecting false praises and as such was Head of Foolishland and was himself biggest of the Fools.
Once two friends who were living in cleverland and had heard about this Foolking wanted to make some fast money and enjoy the hospitality of the king .they hatched a conspiracy and presented themselves in the court of this foolking whose Birthday was coming shortly. They introduced themselves as the Best and Famous dressmakers of cCleverland and offered to make a wonderful Dress for the Kings Birthday. They said that they will make a Lovely Dress for the King which can be visible to the King only since he is most intelligent and foolish people can not see this Dress,The King was very impressed to hear his praises and offered these two clever persons to be his Guests and prepare this wonder Dress for him and offered to Pay them whatever money they Demanded.

These two clever friends were very Happy and they started Living in the Palace and had a large Room with all facilities for preparing the Dress for Fool Kings Birth Day.They posed and acted as if they are Stiching a Dress whenever some body visited the but actually there was no dress, but since they had already boasted that only intelligent People could see their Dress nobody Dared to say that there was nothing visible. They Kept on doing this for Days together and whenever th King enquired from his servants they always praised the Dress and said they have never ever seen such fine thing being made for the King.

This went on for sometime and these two Cleverland Persons kept on enjoying the Hospitality of The FOOLKING and had best of the foods-Chicken Batta,Puri Halwa,Sweets,Cakes chocos and so many things and took a lot of money also.

At last the Birth Day of the King came and after taking Bath etc. he called for the Wonder Dress. The servants asked the two Clever friends to carry their Dress to the King and Dress him up for his birth Day. These two fellows started acting as if they are Holding the Dress and Both of the Acted as if they are carrying it to the King and Nobody was able to see any Dress but kept quite and only falsely Praised the Dress because they were in a Habit of Telling lies to the King and Falsely Praise him.

These two clever friends acted carrying the invisible Dress to the Kings Dressing Room and the FoolKIng was invited for dressing up.The King came and was asked to take off his old cloths and both these Clever friends undressed him and started the actions of dressing him up with the most Beautiful wonder Dress.Though the King could also not see anything but Kept quite so that his servants may not come to know that He is a Fool since he is not able to see the Dress. The King was Dressed up and it was announced that the King Has Been Dressed up in the wonder Dress which is not visible to Fools.

Now on his Birth day the King walked through the city to give audience to his People and with all Glory Band Drum Beats and pomp and show the King came out for the Procession in his wonder Dress. These two Cleverland Dressmakers took their Prize money and left thanking the Foolking.,

While passing through the city everybody observed that the King actually is not wearing anything and he is just completly naked but nobody said anything but kept on cheering and clapping for th Naked Foolking. Now the while the King was passing through the street their was a Child Nainoo  watching this procession and she had come with her mother to watch the Kings Procession.

When the King passed before her she started shouting that Shame Shame the King is Naked Shame shame, then the Foolking Realised that he has been cheated by these two cleverland persons. He immediately took a shawl of  Nainoos mother and covered his Naked body and ordered his staff to get these two Clever Persons.
These two had already run away but the King realised his mistake and announced to Punish all his courtiers who did not tell the truth to him.He also called for Nainoo and Rewarded her and made her the special adviser.
There after the King always avoided the false praises and had only people like Nainoo in her court as his friends and advisors.

Note: This is Nainika's second poem on her blog. Interestingly, she made this song by singing it and building it up....it was lovely to see her work on her poem bit by bit. She of course, typed it herself so the spellings are how she phonetically visualises them. Do hope you will enjoy reading it and encourage her with your kind words like always!! - Lakshmi Kaul (Nainika's Proud Mum)

Nainika's Best Wish Star

A Star from Ninks

One day Dad had a big day in office. Three years worth of hard work on his project was going to see the light of the day.
It was a Saturday and dad had to go to work in the evening for the night. Dad came over to see Nainika , just to say hello.

When dad told Nainika about the ‘important’ work he has to do in office tonight. Nainika immediately set off to her book rack. She diligently looked through her books.
She found a yellow Star sticker. Got it and pasted it on dada’s chest, saying, Dad – ‘All the best’. Dad was so overwhelmed. He held Nainika in his arms and gave her a 100 kissies.

When dad reached office, everyone noticed dad proudly wearing the star from his daughtie. So everyone was like, that is your magic charm tonight Vin. Surely the deployment would be a success.

It is 7:00 am in the morning, and indeed what a successful night . Perfect deployment and all checkpoints passed successfully.

I owe this to you my little princess, for making my day successful. Wish you a lifetime of blessings, love and success.

Vin

Dear Nainika, your first...

Your first word was Dadda!

Your first smile: You were a very serious little bably girl. We were worried at one point that you did not smile and then your Bulbul masi paid us a visit when you were about 4 months old. In her arms you smiled for the first time. We lived in Nottingham at that time.

Your first tooth came close to midnight in India (New Delhi). I squealed with joy and woke everyone up. We all saw your tiny little tooth.

To be continued.....

Naine-tara and the Big Big Competition in Kingdom of Kids

Once upon a time there was a beautiful place far far away called the Kingdom of Kids. The King and Queen of the Kingdom of Kids – Nanu-aara and Nani-aara – decided to have a competition for all the kids. The competition would test the talents of the kids for – Art and Craft, Reading and Writing, Games and Sports, Singing and Dancing, Fashion and Style, and finally a Big Big Secret Competition. The winner of this whole competition would be crowned the Princess of the Kingdom of Kids. Every child in the Kingdom of Kids started preparing to participate in this BIG Competition.
In the land of London-aara, which was a city very close to the Kingdom of Kids, there lived a cute and adorable little girl called Naine-tara. She was brilliant in her studies and a strong sports person. She was always helping everyone and loved to party. She was a very talented girl and liked singing and dancing too. She loved her books and wrote a diary too. When she heard of this Big Competition in the Kingdom of Kids, she decided to participate in it so that she would be crowned the Princess of the Kingdom of Kids.
Naine-tara was a very smart girl. She knew that this was an important and Big competition and she would have to prepare well for it. So she decided to train and prepare herself for this competition.
Naine-tara went to her mommy and daddy to take their guidance for planning her training process for this competition. Her mommy and daddy decided to send her to some of the greatest teachers in the world to prepare for this Big competition.
Naine-tara first went to prepare for the Art and Craft competition. For this she was sent to her teachers Bulu Massi and Arnab Mausu. While Bulu Massi taught her drawing and painting, Arnab Mausu gave her good training for crafts. They told her everything about colours, designs and creativity. Naine-tara like a nice student learnt it all and became a good creative person – all set for the Big competition.
Next, Naine-tara went to prepare for the Reading and Writing competition. For this Naine-tara was sent to her teacher Neha Massi. With lots of interesting stories and books, Neha Massi taught her everything about books and literature. Neha Massi also taught Naine-tara how to write, helped her with spellings and improved her poetry and creative writing. Naine-tara like a nice student learnt it all and became a good literary person – all set for the Big competition.
After this, Naine-tara went to prepare for the Games and Sports competition. For this Naine-tara went to her teachers Vimal Chachu and Archana Chachi. While Vimal Chachu trained her well for all sports and running, Archana Chachi helped her enhance her skills for different games. Naine-tara like a nice student learnt it all and became a good sports person – all set for the Big competition.
Now the next big learning tasks were the preparation for the Singing and Dancing competition and the Fashion and Style competition. For this Naine-tara went to her teachers Anu Massi and Nikhil Mausu. While Nikhil Mausu taught her all the wonderful songs and trained Naine-tara in singing, Anu Massi taught her the twists and twirls and thumkas for improving her dancing talent. Anu Massi also groomed Naine-tara for fashion and style as she trained her in shopping and styling awesome looks. In addition, Anu Massi gave Naine-tara the secrets of makeup and hair styling too. Naine-tara like a nice student learnt it all and became a fashionable singing and dancing person – all set for the Big competition.
After all the training Naine-tara went back to her mommy and daddy. To increase her strength and courage for the competition, her daddy gave Naine-tara a pink power jacket, and her mommy gave her a special gift – a golden heart that was filled with kindness and passion for life. Now finally, Naine-tara was all set for the BIG Competition.
Naine-tara went to the Kingdom of Kids on the day of the competition.
The competition began with the Creative test. For the first part of the Creative test Naine-tara made a beautiful painting of a holiday by the beach. Her painting was so so so beautiful that Naine-tara got the first prize. For the second part of the creative test, Naine-tara created a special papier-maché bowl and painted it is pink and red, and it was so so so beautiful that Naine-tara got the first prize.
After this there was the Reading and Writing competition. For this competition Naine-tara wrote a beautiful poem about all her amazing friends, which was so so so nice that she won the first prize. Naine-tara was also given a spelling dictation test where she managed to spell all the words she was asked to spell absolutely correctly, and so she again won the first prize.
After this Naine-tara went on to participate in the Games and Sports competition and won the race. She also won all the other sports that she participated in and was given the first prize.
After winning so many competitions, Naine-tara went to participate in the singing and dancing competition. For this she sang a beautiful song and also danced to with the coolest twists and twirls, just like a superstar. Everyone in the Kingdom of Kids loved Naine-tara’s performance and enjoyed copying her dance moves and thrilling song. Naine-tara was given the first prize for her amazing performance in the Music and Dance competition.
The last set of competitions was the Fashion and Style competition. With her special skills Naine-tara designed a beautiful dress and styled it with the most amazing shoes, bags, necklace, earrings, tiara and a very special hair-style and amazing makeup that made an amazing fashion statement. Her look was so so so beautiful and stunning that everyone in the Kingdom of Kids wanted to copy her style. Naine-tara was given the first prize again for her amazing sense of style and fashion.
Since Naine-tara had won all the competitions, she went in for the final Big Big Secret Competition to the palace of the King and Queen of Kingdom of Kids – Nanu-aara and Nani-aara. They told Naine-aara about the Big Big secret test which was to change wicked witch Anu-aara into a nice person. This was a very difficult test because wicked witch Anu-aara was a very naughty girl. Naine-aara made a plan and decided to meet Anu-aara to change her into a nice person. When they met, wicked witch Anu-aara started fighting with Naine-aara. Since Naine-aara was wearing the pink power jacket that her daddy gave her, Naine-aara managed to beat Anu-aara in the fight. After this, Naine-aara brought out the golden heart that her mommy gave her and exchanged Anu-aara’s black wicked witch heart with the golden heart. There was a sudden change in Anu-aara who now was a kind and passionate person.
King Nanu-aara and Queen Nani-aara were very very happy to see the change in Anu-aara and thanked Naine-aara. They announced Naine-aara as the clear winner for the Big Big Competition. Naine-aara was also crowned as the Princess of the Kingdom of Kids, and King Nanu-aara announced a big party where everyone sang and danced and ate a lot of yummy vegetables and cake with Princess Naine-aara.
